Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. First time the wait was a bit long but their customer chat line on their page was helpful and put me at ease that I would receive my call. Today my call dropped because of EDD and Claimyr heard my concern on the same chat and another call was made within the hour.

Just want to say I feel for you - toxic workplaces are the worst and it's unfair that you have to choose between your mental health and financial security.
My cousin quit her job last year for similar reasons and she said the key was proving she tried to work things out first. She had to show emails to HR, meeting notes, stuff like that. Even then it was touch and go during the adjudication process but she eventually got approved. The whole thing took like 6 weeks though so definitely don't quit unless you have some savings to tide you over while they decide.
6 weeks? That's terrifying. I don't have much in savings right now which is why I'm so worried about this whole situation.

The system is so confusing though! Like what if I put the wrong information and it messes up my whole claim? I've been putting off filing for 3 days because I'm terrified of making a mistake that will disqualify me permanently.
Mistakes can usually be corrected during the adjudication process. The bigger mistake is not filing at all and losing weeks of benefits.

How much does something like that cost? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to the people at NYS Department of Labor
I thought the same thing initially but honestly it was worth it for me. The regular way of calling wasn't working and I needed answers about my claim status. Much easier than spending entire days redialing busy signals.
Just wanted to add that even if someone isn't eligible for regular unemployment, there might be other programs available. NYS Department of Labor has different types of assistance and the eligibility rules can vary. Also worth checking if any of the freelance clients incorrectly classified her as 1099 when she should have been W-2 - that happens more than people think and can affect benefit eligibility.
Interesting point about misclassification. How would she know if she was classified wrong? Some of her contracts did seem pretty much like regular employment.

One more thing - make sure you're actually eligible before filing. Some travel nurses work as independent contractors rather than employees. If you got 1099s instead of W-2s, you might not qualify for regular unemployment benefits. Check your tax documents first!
