Fun fact: the IRS sends these letters via regular mail, not certified, so they have no way of knowing if it got delivered or not. and they won't resend it automatically if it gets lost. the whole system is completely bonkers.
You'd think an agency that can garnish your wages and put liens on your property would at least spring for certified mail... π€¦ββοΈ
Ugggh this is the WORST. I went through this last year and wasted so much time. My advice? Skip the phone tag completely and use taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you what's actually happening with your return. Saved me hours of stress and confusion trying to decipher what was going on. https://taxr.ai
If you're positive you filed and it was accepted, print a copy of your return and the acceptance confirmation. You may need to submit Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) to get official documentation of what's happening. Their systems are so backed up right now.
I'm legit laughing at how broke the IRS system is. Every year I see these posts. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing over there π€£
No joke. My dad works for them and even he says it's a disaster. They're running on systems from the 1970s and get this - they still use ACTUAL PHYSICAL PAPER for half their processes. Like actual filing cabinets full of tax returns. In 2025!!! π€¦ββοΈ
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use a traditional bank for tax refunds if you can. Online banks are still catching up with their systems for handling these special types of deposits. Learned this the hard way like you. π
Here's a hack that works - if you have both a traditional bank account and an online bank like Chime, have your refund sent to the traditional bank first, then transfer it to your online account afterward. Avoids all these rejection issues!
That's a really smart idea. Will definitely do this next year!
This π―. I do this every year and never have problems.
My sister works for the IRS (not giving tax advice just sharing what I know). She says there's sometimes a 24-48 hour delay between when the IRS initiates the refund and when it actually gets to your bank. If today is your DDD, it could take till Wednesday or Thursday.
Call the tax advocate service at 1-877-777-4778. They can sometimes help speed things up if your refund is delayed past the DDD.
Good luck getting through to them though. They're even harder to reach than the regular IRS!
After trying for weeks to get through to the Taxpayer Advocate Service with no luck, I used claimyr.com to connect with an IRS agent directly. Got my issue resolved in one call!

Can we talk about how WMR tool is completely useless? Oh you want to know what's happening with your refund? Here's a colorful bar that tells you absolutely nothing helpful! π€¦ββοΈ The IRS transcript actually shows all the real information but it's like they deliberately hide the useful stuff behind confusing codes. taxr.ai is the only reason I understood what was happening with my return - translated all that gibberish into actual English.

β’I don't trust random tax websites with my sensitive info tho...

β’You just upload your transcript that you download from the IRS. I was paranoid too before I tried it. Way better than spending hours googling random codes and still not knowing what's going on.

Unpopular opinion but I'd rather wait another 3 weeks than get audited. If they're being thorough at least they're being thorough? Silver lining?

β’Trying to see it that way! Just wish I didn't need the money so badly right now.
