UPDATE: I had a follow-up meeting with HR today. They confirmed there are absolutely no exceptions to the shift change - all overnight positions are being eliminated company-wide. They did offer me a $2/hr raise to help with childcare costs, but that's nowhere near enough to cover $1,400+ monthly for daycare. I asked about part-time or flexible scheduling and was told those options aren't available either. I've documented everything from our conversation. I'm going to submit my resignation next week and apply for unemployment immediately. Based on everyone's advice, I'm going to be very detailed about the childcare hardship in my application. Thanks again for all the guidance.
You've done everything right so far. When you file your claim, make sure to check "voluntarily quit" and then provide this exact explanation about the shift change and childcare situation. Use clear, factual language without emotional content. Mention that you attempted to resolve the issue with your employer through multiple documented conversations. I'd suggest filing your claim online the same day as your last day of work, and be prepared for an eligibility interview within a few weeks. Good luck!
I'm really glad you documented everything with HR and tried all possible accommodations first - that's going to be crucial for your claim. The fact that they offered a $2/hr raise actually works in your favor because it shows they acknowledged the hardship but their "solution" was completely inadequate for the actual cost of childcare in your area. When you file, definitely emphasize that the $1,400+ monthly daycare cost would exceed what the raise could cover, making it financially impossible to continue working the new shift. EDD will likely calculate that a $2/hr raise (roughly $350/month full-time) against $1,400+ childcare costs clearly demonstrates the unreasonable burden. Make sure to keep copies of any written communication about the shift elimination and the inadequate accommodation offer. You've built a really strong case for "good cause" - the circumstances were beyond your control and you exhausted all reasonable options to preserve your employment.
Update: I FINALLY got through to EDD this afternoon! The rep immediately knew what the problem was when I explained it. She said it's a known system issue they call a "claim overlap error" where old uncertified weeks can reappear when a new claim is processed. She removed those 2021 weeks from my certification queue and assured me my current claim is fine. She said I should go ahead and certify as normal this Sunday for my current weeks. What a relief! Thanks everyone for your help - saved me from making a big mistake by certifying for those old weeks!
So glad to see this got resolved! This is such a perfect example of why it's important to reach out to the community before taking action on confusing EDD issues. The system quirks and glitches can be so overwhelming to navigate alone, but having people who've been through similar situations share their experiences really helps. Your post will definitely help other people who encounter this same "claim overlap error" in the future - now they'll know exactly what to ask for when they call EDD!
Absolutely agree! This thread is going to be so helpful for others facing this issue. I'm still pretty new to dealing with EDD and honestly would have been completely lost without everyone's advice here. It's crazy how these system glitches can be so confusing but there are people in the community who actually understand what's happening behind the scenes. Really grateful for communities like this where people share their knowledge instead of just leaving others to figure it out on their own!
after i had my issues with the card I switched to direct deposit for all future payments!! SOO much better, the money shows up in my account 1-2 days after certification. Highly recommend doing this as soon as you get access to your account!!
100% agree with this. Direct deposit is much more reliable than the debit card system. You can set it up through your Money Network account once you get access. Just make sure you keep the card in a safe place even after switching to direct deposit - you may need the card number for account verification in the future.
I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in December, got approved, can see payments in my UI Online account, but still no card after 4 weeks. It's so stressful watching the money just sit there while bills pile up. I called Money Network yesterday and they said my card was mailed 3 weeks ago but "sometimes mail takes longer than expected" - not very helpful! I'm seriously considering requesting a replacement at this point even though I'm worried the original might show up right after. This whole system is so broken, why can't they just do direct deposit from the start instead of forcing everyone to wait for these cards?
UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! The rep confirmed it was indeed a system error where my certification triggered an automatic new claim. She said it's happening because of recent changes to how they process partial unemployment claims. She removed the erroneous new claim from my account and noted that my original claim should continue until August. She said my payment for this week might be delayed by 1-2 days while the system updates, but otherwise everything should continue normally. Thanks everyone for your help and advice! This forum saved me so much stress.
So glad you got this resolved! I'm actually dealing with something similar right now - got a letter about a "new claim" even though I've been on partial UI for months. Your experience gives me hope that it can be fixed quickly once you get through to the right person. For anyone else facing this issue, it sounds like the key takeaways are: 1) Don't panic, it's a known system glitch, 2) Keep certifying on your original claim only, 3) Call ASAP and ask for a Tier 2 specialist, and 4) Document everything with screenshots. Thanks for sharing your resolution - this thread is going to help so many people!
This is such a helpful summary! I'm bookmarking this thread because I have a feeling this issue is going to keep happening to more people. One thing I'd add - when you call EDD, try to get the reference number or case number for when they remove the erroneous claim from your account. That way if the glitch happens again (which seems possible given how buggy their system is), you'll have documentation that this was already addressed before.

Update: I GOT THE LETTER TODAY! The appeal was approved!!! The judge ruled that I had provided sufficient evidence that I reported my income correctly and the overpayment was due to an EDD processing error! I'm so relieved I could cry. Thanks everyone for your input and support during this stressful time. For anyone going through appeals - document EVERYTHING and bring all your evidence to the hearing!

Your experience with the status changing from APPEAL to PAID before getting the official letter is really valuable information for this community. I'm sure many people will find your story helpful if they're going through their own appeals process. Enjoy that relief - you definitely earned it after all that stress!
