One last thing - if you're ever dealing with Washington ESD as an employer or employee and need to get through their phone system, that Claimyr service someone mentioned really does work. Used it myself when I had questions about a contested claim.
Does anyone know if the rates are going to increase again for 2026? Trying to plan our business budget and these costs keep creeping up.
This has been really educational! I had no idea how the funding worked behind the scenes. Makes me appreciate the system more knowing that it's employer-funded rather than coming out of my paycheck directly.
Keep us posted on how it goes! I'm sure other people will be in similar situations and could benefit from hearing about your experience.
Also remember that having a car might help you expand your job search area, which could lead to finding work faster. Sometimes the investment in transportation pays for itself by opening up more opportunities.
Last thing - make sure you're in a quiet place for the phone hearing with good reception. Nothing worse than technical difficulties during something this important. Test your phone beforehand and have a backup plan.
If anyone else needs help reaching Washington ESD for questions about their appeals, I had success with Claimyr recently. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person to understand the process better. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video that explains how it works.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! I think I'm going to accept the severance and file for unemployment. Based on what I've read here, it seems like I should be able to do both. I'll make sure to be completely honest about the severance when I file my claim.

•You made the right choice. That severance will give you a nice cushion while you look for your next opportunity.

One last thing - does anyone know if severance affects the total number of weeks you can collect unemployment?

•No, severance doesn't reduce your total benefit duration. You still get the same number of weeks of eligibility based on your work history and the current program limits.
