Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years due to layoffs in my industry. The process gets easier each time, but that first application can definitely be overwhelming. Take your time with it and don't rush through the questions.
Last thing - after you get approved and start receiving benefits, don't forget that unemployment is taxable income. You can have taxes withheld automatically or pay quarterly estimates. Just something to keep in mind for next year's tax return.
Honestly the most stressful part of being unemployed is making sure I don't mess up the weekly claims. At least now I know I have flexibility with the timing.
For anyone still confused: Washington ESD opens weekly claims every Sunday at 6 AM. You have until the following Saturday at 11:59 PM to certify. Pick any day that works for you and stick with it!
Just my 2 cents but maybe this is a sign you should wait. Buying a house while unemployed seems risky even if you could get approved somehow.
The online system at esd.wa.gov is where you'll do everything - file weekly claims, check your benefit amount, upload documents if needed. Get familiar with it because you'll be using it every week.
One last thing - if you do any part-time or temporary work while collecting unemployment, you have to report it on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit amount based on how much you earned, but you might still get some partial benefits.

I qualified with similar work history. Had about 10 months total work in my base period and got approved. The hardest part was actually the waiting - took about 2 weeks to get my first payment but then it was smooth sailing. Just be patient with the process.

•2 weeks isn't too bad. I was worried it might take months.

•Nah, unless there are complications it usually processes pretty quickly. Keep checking your account status online.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! I feel much more confident about applying now. Going to gather my employment info and file my claim this afternoon. Really appreciate this community for helping confused people like me navigate the Washington ESD system.

•Best of luck with your application. The process can seem overwhelming at first but it's really not too bad once you get started.
