This whole thread is making me realize I should have filed for unemployment when I got laid off last month. I thought the amount would be too small to bother with, but $300+ per week would have made a huge difference.
The job market for restaurant workers is actually pretty good right now if you're willing to be flexible about location and hours. A lot of places are still short-staffed from the pandemic aftermath.
I had to call Washington ESD multiple times during my claim and the hold times were insane. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually sounds like it could be really useful for avoiding those long waits.
One last thing - make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file. Previous employers, dates, wages, reason for separation. Having it all organized will make the process much smoother.
One more tip - if you're switching to direct deposit, make sure your bank account is in good standing. Some banks will reject the deposits if you have any holds or issues with your account.
Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to try calling Washington ESD through Claimyr first, and if that doesn't work I'll mail the form. Really appreciate all the advice and tips.
Just remember the $999 maximum is gross, not net. After federal taxes (if you elect them) you're looking at more like $850 take home.
The benefit calculation seems complicated but Washington ESD generally does a good job of maximizing what you're eligible for based on your work history.

One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between FUTA taxable wages and regular wages for other payroll taxes. Some things that are subject to federal income tax withholding might not be subject to FUTA.

•Can you give an example of wages that would be exempt from FUTA?

•Payments to statutory non-employees, certain family members, some student workers - check IRS Publication 15 for the full list.

Thanks everyone for the help! This thread has been really informative. I feel much more confident about handling FUTA deposits now. And I'm definitely going to check out that Claimyr service for when I need to call government agencies - seems like it could save a lot of time and frustration.
