I finally got through this morning using the mobile app approach someone mentioned earlier. Filed my weekly claim on my phone with no issues. Thanks everyone for the tips! Going to bookmark this thread for future reference.
For anyone still having issues, the Washington ESD customer service page has a technical support section that lists known issues and workarounds. They don't always keep it updated but it's worth checking before you start troubleshooting.
One more thing - if you do find part-time work while collecting benefits, that can extend how long your benefits last since you're earning some money and claiming less each week.
honestly just call them if you're confused. yeah it takes forever to get through but at least you'll get accurate info specific to your situation instead of trying to figure it out yourself
Or use that Claimyr service someone mentioned - seems like a good way to skip the phone hassle.
Just want to add that if anyone is having trouble getting through to ESD to ask about their specific benefit duration, I used Claimyr recently and it was a game changer. Finally got to talk to someone who could explain exactly how my benefits were calculated.
I keep seeing Claimyr mentioned. Is this like a paid service or what's the deal?
Bottom line: plan for 26 weeks maximum, but check your actual benefit year end date and remaining balance in your ESD account. Don't just assume you get the full 26 weeks - it depends on your work history and wages.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. I feel much better about tackling my taxes now. Going to double-check my 1099-G against my payment history and then bite the bullet on whatever I owe. At least now I know to have taxes withheld if I ever need unemployment again.
Last tip from someone who's been through this multiple times - keep good records of all your unemployment-related documents. Payment confirmations, 1099-G forms, any correspondence with Washington ESD. Makes tax time much easier and helps if you ever need to prove anything to the IRS.

Bottom line for the OP - yes companies pay unemployment taxes, yes you're probably eligible, and yes you should file your claim ASAP. Don't wait around wondering about it.

One last tip - if you do run into any issues reaching ESD by phone, that Claimyr service really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of frustration when I needed to update my claim information.
