For what it's worth, I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when I couldn't get through to verify my work history. Ended up saving me a lot of stress because the agent was able to confirm I had enough wages and hours within like 10 minutes. Worth checking out if you're having trouble getting answers.
Thanks everyone for all the info! This has been way more helpful than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website. Sounds like with 8 months of work I should be okay, but I'll double-check my wage records just to be sure.
Just want to add that if you're denied benefits, you can appeal the decision. Sometimes the initial determination is wrong or based on incomplete information. The appeal process gives you a chance to present your case more fully.
The moral of the story is: if you lost your job and worked recently in Washington, file for unemployment. The eligibility requirements are pretty reasonable and you might be surprised to learn you qualify. Even part-time workers, people with short work history, and those with complicated employment situations often qualify for some benefits.
I'm dealing with a similar situation right now. Filed my claim two weeks ago and still waiting for a determination. The uncertainty is killing me! At least you're asking the right questions before filing instead of just hoping for the best like I did.
Not really. The online system just says 'pending' and I can't get through to anyone by phone. It's really frustrating.
This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. The phone system is just overwhelmed and it's nearly impossible to get through during normal business hours.
Just to summarize the key points for the original poster: 1) You likely qualify based on your work history and reason for unemployment 2) File your claim as soon as possible online 3) Be prepared to actively search for work and document your activities 4) Keep detailed records of everything 5) Don't be discouraged if the process takes time - unemployment benefits are there to help people in exactly your situation.
Thanks everyone for clearing this up. I feel much more confident about filling out my forms now knowing unemployment is unearned income, not earned income.

I used Claimyr twice now when I needed to talk to Washington ESD about my benefit duration and other issues. Way easier than trying to get through on the phone myself. They walk you through everything.

•Is it legit though? Seems too good to be true.

•Totally legit. They just help you get connected to the actual Washington ESD agents. Check their website claimyr.com if you want to see how it works.

Bottom line: plan for 26 weeks max, start job searching immediately, keep filing weekly claims, and follow all the work search requirements. Don't count on extensions that probably won't come.

•This is really helpful everyone. Sounds like I need to treat this as a 6 month window to find new work, not a long-term solution.

•Exactly. Unemployment is meant to be temporary bridge income, not permanent support. Use the time wisely.
