Still can't believe unemployment benefits are taxable in the first place. You're already struggling financially and then they want taxes on top of it.
Final thought for the OP - there's no special refund coming for recent unemployment benefits, but definitely plan ahead for next year if you're still receiving benefits. The tax withholding option through Washington ESD can save you from a big tax bill.
One thing I learned the hard way - make sure your employer information is correct on your claim. I had an issue where one of my previous employers' information was wrong and it delayed my claim processing for weeks.
Thanks everyone for all the info. This is way more complicated than I thought it would be, but at least now I have a better idea of what to expect. Hopefully my claim gets processed smoothly!
The correlation between business cycle phases and unemployment is so clear when you're living through it. Academic theory becomes very real when it's your job that's gone and your unemployment claim that's processing.
I work in workforce development and we're seeing unprecedented demand for reemployment services. Clear sign we're in the recession phase where unemployment peaks. The good news is Washington ESD has expanded their job training partnerships to help people transition to new careers.
One thing I learned is to screenshot your payment confirmation page when you file your weekly claim. Good to have that record in case there are ever any questions about when you filed or what you reported.
Wishing you the best with your payments! The hardest part is behind you now that you're approved. Washington ESD is generally pretty consistent with their payment schedule once everything is processed.

One more tip - if you end up needing to appeal anything or deal with overpayment issues down the road, don't wait. Those have even longer timelines and strict deadlines. But hopefully you won't need to worry about that!
