For those struggling with getting through to Washington ESD about tax questions or any other issues, I found Claimyr at claimyr.com really helpful. They handle the phone system navigation so you can actually talk to someone. Made dealing with my withholding questions much easier.
One thing to watch out for - if you change your tax withholding mid-year, it only affects future payments, not past ones. So if you realize you need more withheld, change it ASAP but also set aside money for what you might owe on the benefits already received.
For what it's worth, when I had this situation I found the Washington ESD website pretty helpful. They have a section about how different types of payments affect benefits. Might be worth checking out before you file.
Bottom line - yes you can collect unemployment with severance in most cases. Report it accurately, file right away, and don't stress too much about it. The system is designed to handle these common situations.
Just make sure you have all your documentation ready when you apply - Social Security number, driver's license, employment history for the past 18 months, and bank account info for direct deposit. It makes the process much smoother.
The whole system seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine it's not too bad. The hardest part is usually just getting started and dealing with any initial issues that come up.
One thing to watch out for - if Washington ESD changes any of your claim details or if there's a wage audit, it can delay payments even if you file on time. Always check your account if a payment doesn't come when expected.
Been claiming for 6 months and it's Wednesday every single week like clockwork. Washington ESD may be slow with customer service but their payment processing is pretty reliable once your claim is approved.

I know it seems overwhelming but you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. The first few weeks are the hardest while you're learning all the terminology and procedures.

•We've all been there! Don't hesitate to ask more questions as you go through the process.

Last piece of advice - if your claim gets denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision and often win if you have good documentation. Just make sure to file the appeal within the deadline they give you.

•Hopefully I won't need to worry about appeals, but good to know!

•Most claims are approved without issues, especially for layoffs. You should be fine.
