Last thing - if you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD about your claim and can't get through their regular phone lines, definitely check out that Claimyr service. Made such a difference in my experience dealing with the system.
This has been really helpful! I bookmarked this thread in case I need to reference it later. Thanks everyone for explaining everything so clearly.
I work in HR and see this confusion a lot. The short answer is: if you worked for an employer who paid into the unemployment insurance system and you lost your job through no fault of your own, you can probably file. The wage requirements eliminate people who barely worked, but most people with steady part-time or full-time employment will qualify.
This thread has been super helpful! I was laid off from my restaurant job two weeks ago and wasn't sure if my part-time status would disqualify me. Sounds like I should definitely apply. One more question - do I need to file weekly claims even while my initial application is being processed?
And if you run into issues reaching ESD during the process, remember that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Really helped me stay on top of my claim status.
Something people don't talk about enough is how unemployment affects your future job prospects. Employers sometimes view long-term unemployment as a red flag, which creates this horrible catch-22 where being unemployed makes it harder to get employed.
The key is to stay active and visible during your unemployment. Volunteer, take courses, do freelance work if possible. Show that you're growing and learning, not stagnating.
After reading all these responses, I feel less alone in what I'm experiencing. It's validating to know that others have gone through similar struggles and come out the other side. Thank you all for sharing your experiences.

I'm seeing a lot of good advice here about PFML. Just wanted to add that you should apply as soon as possible because there can be processing delays, especially if they need additional documentation from your doctor about the bed rest requirement.

•What kind of documentation do they typically need from doctors?

•Usually just a form confirming your inability to work and the expected duration. Your doctor's office should be familiar with the PFML paperwork.

This whole thread has been super helpful! I was in the same situation last year and wish I had found information this clear. Definitely go with PFML - it's literally designed for exactly what you're going through.

•Thanks everyone! I feel much more confident about applying for PFML now instead of wasting time with unemployment.
