One more tip - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, try using that Claimyr service people mentioned. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked really well when I needed to talk to someone about my benefit calculation.
If you do need to talk to someone at Washington ESD and can't get through, I had success using Claimyr. They basically wait on hold for you and then connect you when an agent becomes available. Saved me a lot of time and frustration.
Several people have mentioned Claimyr now. I might have to give it a try if I can't get through on my own.
The bottom line is that in Washington state, you can typically receive both severance and unemployment benefits. The key is being honest about your situation and understanding the specific terms of your severance package.
I wish they would just tell you upfront what you'll get instead of making you wait for all the calculations and letters.
One last tip - if you need to talk to Washington ESD about your benefit calculation or have questions, definitely check out Claimyr. So much easier than trying to get through on your own. Saved me tons of frustration when I had questions about my monetary determination.
I'm going to look into this Claimyr thing. Getting through to ESD has been impossible for me.
For anyone still on the fence about timing - I delayed filing by one week because I thought I might get called back. That one week delay ended up costing me a week of benefits because my employer never did call me back.
I tried but they said waiting in hopes of recall isn't sufficient reason for backdating. Lesson learned - file immediately and cancel later if you get called back.
This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helps - when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about specific circumstances. Their service got me through to an agent who could explain my options properly.
The bottom line is there's no downside to filing immediately and several potential downsides to waiting. File now, deal with complications later if they arise.

Based on filing Monday, Wednesday is your most likely payment day. That's been my experience and most others I know. Fingers crossed for you!
