Ppl w/ kids def getting delayed this yr. EITC/CTC takes forever bc of PATH act. IMO check transcripts not WMR, WMR is useless rn. Most of us who filed end of Jan w/ kids are stuck in same boat. Transcripts will show codes like 570/971 if there's issues. N/A transcript means they haven't even looked at ur return yet. Hang in there, prob another week or two.
I would suggest not checking WMR too frequently. Last year I checked multiple times daily and it actually triggered a temporary security lock on my account. The system sometimes flags repeated logins as suspicious activity. My sister-in-law had her return delayed an additional three weeks because of this, and she had to verify her identity before processing continued. It's better to check perhaps once every few days, preferably in the morning after overnight updates.
Just got my state refund today after waiting a month longer than federal! It's like waiting for a bus - you stand there forever and then two show up at once. Except in this case, the federal bus came on schedule and the state bus was stuck in traffic. My federal hit my account exactly 18 days after filing, but state took 47 days. The money finally arrived just in time for my quarterly estimated payment deadline, which was cutting it close!
Be careful with assuming everything is fine just because it's common this year. While it's true that many people are experiencing federal before state, here's what you should watch for: 1. First, check if your state return was actually accepted - not just submitted 2. Next, verify that your state has your correct banking information if you chose direct deposit 3. Then, review your state's tax agency website for any notices about processing delays 4. Finally, if it's been more than 8 weeks, you should definitely contact your state tax agency I've seen cases where people assumed delays were normal when actually there was an issue requiring attention. Don't just wait indefinitely.
You might want to check if you're hitting the AGI thresholds. The CTC starts phasing out at $200k for single and $400k for married filing jointly. A lot of people miss this detail... ask me how I know š . If your amended return pushed you over one of these thresholds, that could explain the reduction. Worth checking your AGI on line 11 of your 1040 to confirm.
Does this phase-out apply to the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) as well? My AGI is just under the threshold but I'm receiving the refundable portion and that's where I'm seeing the discrepancy.
I went through this exact situation last month with my amended return. The CTC was short by about $1,200 for my two kids. After calling the IRS (took 3 attempts), I discovered that when you file an amended return, sometimes the system doesn't properly apply all the qualifying child information from the amendment. In my case, they had to manually review my return and issue a supplemental payment. It took about 3 weeks after the call, but I eventually got the full amount I was entitled to.
Had the same issue. Called twice. Got nowhere. Third time worked. Agent fixed it immediately. System glitch with amended returns. Common problem this year. Extra verification required for CTC on amendments. Worth the persistence.
Just to clarify for anyone reading this thread later: ⢠The issue affects both regular CTC and ACTC ⢠Amended returns trigger additional verification ⢠The IRS doesn't automatically notify you of this review ⢠You typically need to call to resolve it I'm skeptical that this will be fixed for the next tax season - been an issue for years.
The IRS is like a black box this time of year - information goes in but nothing comes out until they're good and ready. It's like waiting for a bus in the rain with no schedule. I'm in a similar situation but filed February 1st. Called twice and got different answers each time. The community wisdom seems to be that early filers are actually waiting longer than mid-season filers this year, which makes absolutely no sense.
You need to request your Account Transcript ASAP! The Transaction Codes will tell you exactly what's happening. Look specifically for TC 150 (return processed), TC 806 (refund amount), and TC 846 (refund issued). If you see a TC 570 (additional account action pending) or TC 971 (notice issued), that would explain the delay. PATH Act processing should be complete by now, so there might be another verification happening that the phone representative didn't have visibility into.

I was in exactly your situation on March 8th last year. Transcript had updated on March 1st. WMR changed to processing on March 2nd. Was told to expect 846 code on March 8th with DDD of March 12th. I was completely lost trying to interpret all the codes and dates. Used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it predicted everything perfectly. It explained that my cycle code meant weekly updates and showed me exactly what to expect next. Saved me from checking WMR 50 times a day!

ā¢Thanks for mentioning this. Just what I needed.

ā¢To clarify - this tool doesn't change when you get your refund, it just helps you understand what's happening with your return. The IRS processing schedule remains the same regardless.

OMG I've been tracking this EXACT pattern for years! š§ I'm a cycle 05 filer too and I keep spreadsheets of all my refund timelines. Last year I filed on 2/2/2023, transcript updated 2/17/2023, WMR changed 2/18/2023, 846 code appeared 2/24/2023, and refund hit my bank 2/28/2023. The year before was almost identical timing! I literally plan my bill payments around this schedule now. The only time it ever varied was 2021 when there were those massive COVID processing delays.

ā¢Have you ever had your refund come before the 846 code appeared? I'm trying to figure out if I should be checking my bank account or just wait for the transcript update.

ā¢Did ur WMR bar ever disappear during processing? Mine vanished last week and I'm freaking out a bit.
