I went through a phone appeal in December and it was actually less scary than I expected! The judge was professional and asked straightforward questions. For your situation with the PDF vs JPG issue, make sure you can clearly explain that you DID complete all the required job searches - you just uploaded the proof in the wrong format. Have specific details ready: company names, dates you applied, how you applied (online, email, etc.), and any confirmation numbers or emails you received. The judge will likely ask you to walk through a typical week of job searching activities. Practice explaining your process out loud beforehand so you sound confident. Also, if you still have those PDF files, mention that you can provide them in the correct format immediately if needed. Regarding backpay - yes, if you win they'll process all your past weeks automatically, but like others said, it can take 2-4 weeks to actually see the money. The important thing is that you've been certifying every two weeks even while disqualified. Good luck! Your case sounds pretty straightforward since it's just a formatting issue, not an actual failure to job search.
This is really reassuring to hear! I've been so anxious about this hearing but you're right - it does seem like a straightforward case since I actually did all the job searches. I still have all those PDF files saved and I've been keeping a detailed spreadsheet with company names, application dates, and methods. I'll definitely practice explaining my weekly routine out loud before the call. Thanks for the encouragement - I really needed to hear from someone who went through something similar!
I had my phone appeal hearing about 6 months ago for a similar documentation issue and wanted to share some specific advice. The judge will likely focus on whether you actually performed the work search activities, not just the format issue. Be ready to provide exact details - I had to give specific company names, job titles I applied for, and dates. One thing that really helped me was having a printed copy of my job search log in front of me during the call so I could quickly reference details when asked. The judge asked me to describe my typical job search process step-by-step, so practice explaining that clearly. For the backpay question - yes, it should be automatic IF you've been certifying every two weeks (which it sounds like you have). Mine took about 18 days after the written decision to hit my account. The key is to keep certifying even during the appeal process, which you're already doing. Don't stress too much - your case sounds very winnable since you actually did the required activities. The PDF vs JPG thing is honestly ridiculous on EDD's part. You've got this!
Just a quick update from what I've seen recently - if you're still having trouble after trying the format suggestions and waiting a few days, there's one more thing to check. Make sure the name you're using matches EXACTLY what's on your Social Security card, not your driver's license or what you typically go by. EDD's system is very particular about this and will reject the registration if there's any mismatch, even if it's just a middle initial issue.
UPDATE: Wanted to let everyone know what finally worked! After trying to call the technical support line for 2 days (never got through), I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. Got connected to an EDD rep in about 30 minutes this morning! The first person couldn't help, but they transferred me to a tier 2 specialist who verified my identity and updated my email address on the spot. She also unlocked my account and I was able to immediately log in and complete my certification that was pending. Payment should be deposited to my Money Network card in 24-48 hours. If anyone else has this issue, definitely ask for a tier 2 specialist who works with account security - regular reps really can't help with this specific problem. Thank you all for your help!!!
So glad you got it sorted out! This is super helpful info for anyone else dealing with the same issue. The tier 2 specialist detail is key - I've seen so many people get frustrated because they keep getting transferred to regular reps who just can't make those account changes. Thanks for updating us with what actually worked!
This is exactly the kind of detailed follow-up that helps everyone! I've been lurking here for weeks trying to figure out my own EDD issues and seeing real solutions with step-by-step updates is so valuable. The tier 2 specialist distinction is something I never would have known to ask for. Bookmarking this thread for future reference - seems like account access problems are way more common than they should be. Glad you got your payment sorted before rent was due!
This whole thread has been so helpful! I'm actually dealing with a similar situation right now - got locked out after what I think was a security update that changed something with my account. I've been putting off calling because I heard horror stories about wait times, but seeing that Daniela actually got through and got it resolved gives me hope. Going to try the Claimyr service tomorrow and make sure to specifically ask for a tier 2 specialist if the first person can't help. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - makes such a difference knowing what actually works vs just guessing!
I tried certifying by phone last year and the system kept hanging up on me when I tried to enter my work search information. something about "too many attempts" but I was only trying to enter 3 job contacts! ended up having to go to the library to use their computers and certify online. phone system seems buggy sometimes.
That's frustrating about the phone system glitching on work search entries! I've had similar issues with automated systems timing out. For anyone else who might run into this - if the phone system keeps hanging up during work search reporting, try speaking your entries more slowly and clearly, and make sure you're in a quiet area with good cell reception. Sometimes background noise can confuse the voice recognition. Also, have all your job contact info written down beforehand so you're not pausing to think - the system might interpret long pauses as connection issues. If it keeps failing, the online system is definitely more reliable for complex entries like work search activities.

While reaching EDD by phone is certainly challenging, I'd suggest trying these specific approaches: 1. Call at 8:01am Tuesday-Thursday (avoid Monday rush) 2. When prompted for your Social Security Number, don't enter anything - this sometimes routes you to a live person faster 3. Try the Technical Support line (1-855-327-7057) and then ask for a transfer 4. Ensure your UI Online contact information is 100% up-to-date, as they sometimes try to call claimants with issues 5. Check if your identity verification was successfully processed - this is a common reason for claims being stuck in pending Also make sure your certification answers are consistent with your application to avoid triggering eligibility interviews.

•Thanks for the detailed advice! I hadn't heard about not entering my SSN - that's an interesting trick. My certification answers should be consistent, but it's possible the identity verification didn't process correctly since I never got confirmation. I'll try the technical support line tomorrow too.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through using any of these methods? I'm curious which one worked (if any).

•UPDATE: Success! I finally got through using a combination of tips from this thread. Called the main number at exactly 8:01am, used option 1-2-4, and when asked for SSN I didn't enter anything. Was on hold for 47 minutes but finally spoke to someone who confirmed my ID verification had failed to process correctly even though I completed it. She fixed it on the spot and said payments should be released in 24-48 hours. Thank you all for the help - this community is amazing!
