my friend did the beta and said the income section was SUPER confusing... kept asking for weird tax line items she couldnt find. but maybe it was just her situation? i have self-employment income so now im worried itll be a mess for me too
The self-employment section has been redesigned this year. Make sure you have your full Schedule C and any other business tax forms readily available before starting. The specific line items requested are trying to capture more accurate business income data following the FAFSA Simplification Act provisions.
honestly for ED applications at css schools i wouldnt even bother with the beta. my daughter got accepted ED last year and the school didnt even look at fafsa until january anyway. css profile is what matters for the early packages
Update for everyone: The Department of Education just posted a technical bulletin about this exact issue. If your application has "disappeared" after editing, they recommend: 1. Wait 24 hours for system refresh 2. If still missing, use the "FAFSA Recovery Tool" under the Help section 3. If that doesn't work, call FSA directly and request a "submission recovery" using your FSA ID They're also extending some priority deadlines by 15 days to accommodate for these technical issues. Check with your specific schools to confirm if they're honoring the extension.
Thank you! I don't see the recovery tool you mentioned, but I'll keep looking. Where exactly is it located? I'm on the Help page now.
So did you get this resolved? I'm having the same problem right now after trying to update my parent contribution section. Really worried because my college choice said I need to have everything finalized by next Friday or I might miss out on their institutional scholarship.
Yes! I finally got it fixed. The Recovery Tool someone mentioned above didn't work for me, but I used that Claimyr service to get through to FSA quickly, and the agent was able to recover my application. She said it went into some kind of "verification queue" that hides the application from view until they process it. It's now showing back in my account and says "processed" instead of the earlier "submitted" status. Definitely call them ASAP if you're on a deadline!
i got SO confused by all this last year!!! signed up for a parent plus loan but then found out my credit wasn't approved so had to do all these extra steps for my daughter to get more unsubsidized loans. the whole system is a mess tbh. but yes the deposit deadline and aid acceptance are different things.
Sorry you had to deal with that extra stress! If you don't mind sharing, what were the extra steps when your Parent PLUS was denied? I'm a little worried about our approval since we're self-employed with somewhat complicated finances.
when my plus loan was denied my daughter automatically qualified for $4000 more in unsubsidized loans. had to fill out a form saying we were declined plus but wanted the extra unsubsidized loans. took like 2 weeks to process. not the end of the world but just more paperwork during an already stressful time!!!
One more important detail: make sure to complete the FAFSA every year by the priority deadline (usually between Dec 1 - Mar 1 depending on the school). Your financial aid package can change significantly year-to-year based on your financial situation, so staying on top of those annual deadlines is crucial for maintaining aid eligibility throughout your daughter's education.
To directly answer your questions: 1. You know your FAFSA is complete when: - The status shows "Processed" on studentaid.gov - You receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) via email - You can see a calculated SAI (Student Aid Index) number 2. You CAN correct information: Log in to studentaid.gov, select "Make FAFSA Corrections" and update any incorrect information. 3. To verify what was submitted: View the Student Aid Report (SAR) which shows all submitted information and calculated results. Best to check this soon, as some schools award aid on a first-come, first-served basis!
After checking everything, we found out my husband had incorrectly entered our home equity as an investment asset (it's not supposed to be reported for FAFSA) which would have SIGNIFICANTLY hurt our daughter's aid eligibility. I was able to make the correction online, and we received an updated SAI about 10 days later. The schools automatically received the updated information. Thank you everyone for your help! I feel so relieved that we caught this before aid decisions were made.
I'm so glad you caught this error! Home equity is indeed excluded from the FAFSA (though not from the CSS Profile that some private schools require). This is exactly the type of mistake that can cost families thousands in aid. For anyone else reading this thread, always remember that your primary residence value is NOT reported on the FAFSA!

I'm dealing with a similar situation but with a different problem. My son's university received our FAFSA but there's an issue with our income verification. We submitted additional documents three weeks ago and still nothing. The whole system seems backlogged. The most frustrating part is that every school seems to handle these delays differently. One school told us they'll issue a preliminary aid package based on the initial FAFSA while waiting for corrections, but another school (where my son wants to go) refuses to do anything until they have the final corrected version. It makes comparing offers impossible.

•That's exactly my concern! How are we supposed to make decisions without complete information? Did the school offer any flexibility on their enrollment deadlines?

•In our case, they extended the deposit deadline by two weeks, but that's it. And they made a point of saying it was a "one-time exception." So frustrating. Have you checked if your correction changed your SAI significantly? That might affect how flexible Stockton will be.

Just an update - I called Stockton's financial aid office directly this morning about a similar issue for my nephew. They told me they're aware of the FAFSA correction delays and ARE offering enrollment deposit deadline extensions on a case-by-case basis. You need to speak with a counselor though, not just the front desk staff. Ask specifically for an "enrollment deposit extension due to FAFSA correction delays.

•Thank you so much for this update! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll call them first thing tomorrow and use that specific wording.
